Silo Cleaning & Safety FAQs

Cleaning schedules depend on many factors such as the type of commodity, how long it has been inside of the bin, how old the bin is, etc. IA Bulk Materials can assist you in inspecting your silo and forming a cleaning schedule that will best fit your facility.

There are many signs that you can look for to determine if you have a fire/ smolder in your silo. Some of the key indicators are: strong odors, moisture/ condensation, oil/ sludge, and discolored product. Learn more about our emergency silo fire services here.

Silo fires can be extremely dangerous if they are not handled properly. When dealing with a fire in a confined space, there are a lot more factors that you have to account for. The first thing that you need to do is contact an emergency silo fire response team. The quicker that you can get a team onsite, the better. Once you are in contact with our emergency silo fire response team, they will tell you the steps that you should take prior to them arriving on site. It is important to note, when you are dealing with a silo fire, you should never use water as a method of fire suppression! With silo fires, water can add fuel to the fire and increase the potential of vapor explosions. To learn more about our silo fire services, visit our emergency silo fire response page.

A Bin Whip is a popular bulk cleaning solution that can be used on any vessel, silo, or bin. Bin whips are constructed so that they are strong enough to break through hardened or compacted materials. These tools are safe and efficient in removing built up material within a structure. At IA Bulk Materials, not only are we equipped with hydraulic and pneumatic whips, but we also have our own proprietary whips that are strong enough to break through material that a standard whip cannot handle. To learn more about bin whipping services, check out our bin whipping page.

Cardox blasting is an effective method when there is built up material within your silo that is tough to remove. Cardox tubes are filled with liquid carbon dioxide. The tubes are placed into the material and then energized, causing the carbon dioxide to burst. This method allows us to safely blast all of the built up material in order for it to be removed. To learn more, check out our cardox blasting page.
